"Azerbaijan-EU ties to take more concrete form at Eastern Partnership summit"
Latvia has always offered its support for the strengthening of relations between the EU and Azerbaijan, the country’s president, Raimonds Vejonis, said on Friday.
“This [support] has been in different formats, both within the Eastern Partnership and other frameworks. We know that there is going to be another meeting on the Eastern Partnership program at the end of this year, and various flexible ways will be created to further expand the cooperation between our partners, the EU and Azerbaijan,” Vejonis said at a joint press conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Riga.

“As you know, a summit will be held for this purpose in November of this year. This will define the long-term prospects of our mutual cooperation and relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union will take a more concrete form,” the Latvian president said. “Azerbaijan’s efforts in this direction should be greatly appreciated. I’m hopeful that other partner countries cooperating with Azerbaijan and the EU will get greater opportunities in the area of transport and economy during the partnership summit to be held in Estonia in November of this year.”

The Latvian president said he appreciates Azerbaijan’s work in the implementation of the Southern Gas Corridor project and efforts to deliver natural gas to consumers in the European Union.

"I think we should work more closely so that we can make greater progress in this direction. Our cooperation is multifaceted. We discussed human rights in Azerbaijan, touched upon supremacy of law, and we noted that these areas are important for the development of any country. I would also like to note that our country will continue to contribute to further development of relations between the European Union and Azerbaijan,” he added.
