Santa Monica police Lt. Saul Rodriguez told City News Service that the suspect fired at officers, who then returned fire. He said a gun was found at the scene.
The suspect was taken to a hospital. His condition was unknown.
Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said on Twitter that the officers involved were not injured.
A video posted on social media showed police officers converging on a man who was lying on the ground, and an officer could be heard shouting for the man not to move, according to the Associated Press. The officers approached the man with their guns drawn and appeared to kick an object away from his body.
No details were immediately released about the victim of the initial shooting.
