Latvia’s ex-president hails Azerbaijan’s experience in hosting high-profile events
The Global Young Leaders Forum is a new platform for the youth to meet with experienced people representing cultures of different countries, said former president of Latvia Valdis Zatlers as he addressed the opening ceremony of the forum in Baku.
He said the forum defines the role of young people in the world.

Zatlers hailed Azerbaijan’s experience in hosting high-profile international events. “This event is a new idea that involves young people. Taking this opportunity, young leaders can benefit from experience of well-known political figures and statesmen,” the ex-president added.

Ukraine’s former first lady Kateryna Yushchenko said in his speech that holding a youth forum is a very good idea.

Such forums provide young leaders with an opportunity to study the experience of skilled politicians, Yushchenko said.

She noted that she is participating in the forum together with her 18-year-old daughter. The former first lady of Ukraine added that she is happy to show her daughter how beautiful Azerbaijan is.

Speaking at the forum, former Bulgarian president Rosen Plevneliev said that he is proud of the fact that during his presidency he signed an agreement with Azerbaijan on a strategic partnership.

Plevneliev recalled that he took part in the opening of the Southern Gas Corridor project as the Bulgarian president.

“During my presidency, an agreement was signed on the purchase of 1 billion cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan. I am proud that I have made efforts to further develop ties between the two countries. Bulgaria and Azerbaijan enjoy close friendly and economic ties,” he added.

The Global Young Leaders Forum was organized by the Nizami Ganjavi International Center with support of the Azerbaijani State Committee for Work with the Diaspora.

Former Serbian President Boris Tadic, former Croatian President Ivo Josipovic, former Prime Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina Zlatko Lagumdzija, former President of Israel Dalia Itzik and former Turkish Foreign Minister Hikmet Cetin are also participating in the forum.

Other authoritative public figures as well as about 20 distinguished guests from among the heads of big companies have been invited to participate in the forum. About 80 young leaders and researchers, representatives of prestigious higher educational institutions as well as a number of young businessmen are taking part in the event.

During panel meetings and group discussions to be held within the forum, young leaders will exchange views on various topics with former heads of state.
