During Michelle Obama's first year in the White House, her aides earned a combined $1.24million.
Melania Trump's staff costs taxpayers $486,700 a year, less than 40 per cent of the amount spent under Obama.
However, the larger staff is likely due to Michelle Obama entering the East Wing with an aggressive agenda, including her Let's Move! initiative fighting childhood obesity.
In contrast, Melania Trump spent her first few months as First Lady living in New York with her son Barron.
'As with all things that she does, she is being very deliberate in her hiring, focusing on quality over quantity,' Melania's communications director Stephanie Grisham said in an email to Fox News.
'It is important to her that the team is a good fit for what she wants to accomplish as first lady, and that everyone works well together. She also wants to be mindful and responsible when it comes to taxpayer money.'
These figures come from an annual report the White House sends to Congress showing the names, positions and salaries of all its personnel. However, both the Trump and Obama administrations have acknowledged that there are several staffers that work for the First Lady that are not included in official numbers.
With those statistics in mind, Melania actually has nine people working for her in the White House, five more than are included in the annual report.
Some Obama administration officials say that it is possible that Michelle Obama had up to 24 staffers at one point during her husband's presidency.
Personnel reports list a chief of staff, a communications director, a deputy chief of staff and a deputy director of advance for Melania.
Michelle's aides included those positions as well as multiple others.
However, Hillary Clinton had 19 staffers and Laura Bush had at least 18 aides, far more than Melania's nine.
