German strategists predict ‘increasingly disorderly’ world
German military strategists have run a confidential scenario study part of which predicts an “increasingly disorderly” world by 2040, a report has revealed, adding that the country's military would take “concrete” measures to prepare for that scenario.
German weekly Der Spiegel said in its newest edition that the military strategists had envisaged bad times for Germany and the European Union (EU) in a confidential study titled “Strategic Perspective 2040.”

“The EU enlargement has been largely abandoned, more states have left the bloc,” they wrote in the study. “The increasingly disorderly, sometimes chaotic and conflictual world has dramatically changed the security policy environment for Germany and Europe.”

Reuters cited a German Defense Ministry spokesman as saying that the strategists had made “robust predictions” but had not assigned probability gradations or triggered decisions. He did not disclose any further details.

This is while the German weekly, known for its investigative journalism, said the findings of the study would be followed by concrete armament plans in the coming years.

The United Kingdom has decided to leave the EU. And there are other members that complain about some of the centralized policies of the bloc. Several countries have also been struggling to join for years on end without success.

There are also conflicts plaguing Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and several African states.

The study also considered five other scenarios. Two predicted an expansion of Russian influence, and two others envisaged a more peaceful world.

But the weekly’s reporting on back-up armament plans to match the worst-case scenario may be an indication that that scenario is considered more likely by the strategists.
