Strong earthquake in Iran had no effect on yesterday’s earthquake in Azerbaijan
Aftershocks are continuing in the areas where the earthquake happened, Gurban Yetirmishli, head of the Republican Seismic Survey Center of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), told on Thursday.
According to him, after the earthquake, the process of energy release is underway in the area, so aftershocks are normal. “Over 30 aftershocks have been recorded in the epicenter. After the strong earthquake, a 3-magnitude earthquake was felt at night. Other earthquake shocks were weak. The energy release process will continue until the epicenter returns to its previous calm state. However, there is no strong earthquake risk in the area,” Yetirmishli noted.

He said that the Seismological Center located at the epicenter of the earthquake and inspections are being carried out in the area. “There were no damages. Perhaps, cracks created in homes built of poor quality materials, but there was no serious damage,” the head of the center added.

Answering the question whether there is a connection between the recent quake in Iran and the one that took place in Azerbajan, Yetirmishli said that strong earthquake in Iran had no effect on yesterday’s earthquake in Azerbaijan: “From the point of view of the geological structure and tectonic breakdowns, the quake that happened in Iran is not related to the one in Azerbaijan.”

On November 15, an earthquake happened at 11:48pm in the country’s Aghdam district.

The quake occurred at a depth of 25 km. The magnitude of the quake is 6 at epicenter, but it was felt at 5-3-magnitude in districts.
