Miroslav Lajcak: Conflicts should be avoided first

Conflicts around the world should be avoided first, said Miroslav Lajcak, President of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly.

He made the statement at the NAM Mid-Term Ministerial Conference, titled “Promoting international peace and security for sustainable development”, in Baku on Thursday, Azvision.az reports.

Speaking about the principles of sustainable development, Lajcak said he believes the Non-Aligned Movement will be able to achieve good results for sustainable development.

"People can not achieve social and economic development as long as there is a conflict. We must ramp up our efforts for sustainable development on a global level. We all need to take part in these efforts. Another principle is that we need a link between development and peace. Young people are currently influenced by extremism. The negotiations here will help us prevent this. We need to establish a link between peace, security and sustainable development, but without informing it can not be achieved. We now need a long-term peace and sustainable development, as well as a multilateral system and cooperation for our future, more than ever before,” he added.
