Heavy summer storm in Poland kills a town

Polish officials say the deputy mayor of a town in central Poland was killed by a tree branch toppled by a heavy summer storm. The storm left 10 other people injured and damaged 300 buildings.

Police on Friday said that Robert Makowski, deputy mayor of Wolomin, a town near Warsaw, died as a result of injuries sustained when a tree branch fell on him late Thursday.

Pawel Fratczak, a spokesman for firefighters, said that they intervened more than 4,300 times as a result of the storms and that on Friday morning 74,000 households were without electricity.

Among the injured was a firefighter who was hurt while trying to secure a roof in northern Poland.
