Swedish Air Force fighter jet crashes after collision with bird

According to Sweden's Armed Forces, a jet fighter has crashed in southern Sweden, apparently after striking a bird.

The armed forces said that the pilot of the Swedish-built JAS 39 Gripen fighter jet ejected safely.

"The pilot bailed out and he has apparently waved at the rescue helicopter and he seems to be okay at least. We don't know much more at the moment," spokesperson Johan Lundberg told TT news agency, as cited by the Local Sweden.

The fighter jet crashed near Karlskrona — 160 kilometers of Malmo.

Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a Swedish multi-role fighter of the fourth generation developed by SAAB Avionics. Since 1997, it is in service with the Swedish Air Force.
