CIS Defence Ministers Council to meet in Tashkent on 12 October

The CIS Defence Ministers Council to sit in Tashkent on 12 October, BelTA learned from the press service of the CIS Executive Committee.

The CIS defense ministers will consider about 20 issues. They are expected to discuss the situation in the Central Asian region and priority tasks in countering international terrorism, military cooperation among the CIS member states, and the prospects for the Unified System for Monitoring and Evaluating Radiation, Chemical and Biological Situations. The focus will also be on cooperation in the field of aviation operations of the armed forces of the CIS countries, implementation of the concept for the Unified System of State Radar Identification, cooperation in military education, joint events to mark the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

The council intends to adopt a plan of action for 2019, sign documents aimed at the development of a joint (unified) communications system of the armed forces of the CIS states, information support for the activities of the armed forces for the period up to 2022, cooperation in navigation, topography, geodesy, and metrology.

The CIS Defense Ministers Council was established in 1992.It consists of representatives from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

The council coordinates military cooperation of the CIS countries, considers conceptual approaches to the issues of military policy and military construction, develops proposals for the implementation of efforts aimed at the prevention of armed conflicts. Its functions also include consideration of draft treaties and other documents on matters of defense and military construction, development of proposals for the harmonization of legal acts in this area, and the management of the CIS Collective Peacekeeping Forces.
