Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" has broken a new record, 24 years after release.

The holiday track, according to Chart Data, has broken the Spotify record for the most streams in a single day, with 10.8m streams on Christmas Eve. The record was previously held by XXXTentacion's "Sad!", which garnered 10.4m streams on 19 June, the day after he was fatally shot.

Research carried out for Channel 5 in 2016 attempted to uncover how much artists are earning from Christmas song royalties, with Carey making an estimated £400,000 a year.

The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl are thought to earn the same amount for "Fairytale of New York", while Slade are estimated to earn £1m in royalties per year for "Merry Xmas Everybody".

The Independent ranked "All I Want for Christmas Is You" as the fourth best Christmas song of all time, writing: "Its unyielding Christmas spirit and those diminished (infectious) C minor chords combine for the ultimate experience of festive cheer, with a perfect mix of nostalgia and pop sentimentalism thrown in for good measure."

The track was released on 1 November 1994 and was the lead single for Carey's Merry Christmas holiday album. The musician wrote the song with Walter Afanasieff.

"All I Want for Christmas Is You" is currently in seventh place on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the highest-charting holiday-themed track in 60 years.
