Brazilian president says US military base may be established in Brazil

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro did not rule out that he may discuss with Washington the establishment of a US military base on Brazilian territory, he said in an interview with the TV channel SBT on Thursday, TASS reports.

"The issue of the physical [presence of the base] may be even called symbolic. Today the capabilities of the American, Chinese and Soviet armed forces reach all parts of the world regardless of [the presence of] a base. However, depending on what will happen in the world, maybe this issue will have to be discussed in the future," he said in response to a question.

"My rapprochement with the US is an economic issue, but it could be military as well. We may ink an agreement in the specified area," Bolsonaro added.

On October 28, the runoff presidential election was held in Brazil. Bolsonaro of the Social Liberal Party won the election. On January 1, the politician assumed office with a four-year mandate.
