At Least 170 Protesters, 20 Police Officers Injured in Brazil Teacher Riots
At least 170 demonstrators and 20 police officers were injured during the protests against recently-approved bill in Brazil`s city of Curitiba, local media reported.
At least 170 demonstrators and 20 police officers have been injured in clashes as teachers took to the streets of Brazil`s city of Curitiba to protest a recently-approved bill changing state pension payments, local media reported.

According to Agencia Brasil`s Wednesday report, at least 45 injured protesters were taken to emergency care units or hospitals. Seven were arrested, according to the media outlet.

Teachers have been on strike since Monday, as the country`s Legislative Assembly approved changes to pensions in the early evening. Video clips distributed by local newspapers showed members of law enforcement shooting tear gas as protesters approached the assembly.

"Unfortunate, shocking and unwanted scenes… The attack did not come from police. They stood to protect the building of the Legislative Assembly," the governor of Parana state, Beto Richa, said as quoted by Agencia Brasil

As many as 33,000 retirees who have their pensions paid by the state will now be transferred to a different scheme where pensions will be paid by working teachers alongside the state.
