 Minor planet named after great Azerbaijani poet Nasimi

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has passed a decision to name one of the minor planets after great Azerbaijani poet and thinker Imadeddin Nasimi on the occasion of his 650th anniversary.

The relevant motion was raised by Azerbaijani astronomer Eyyub Guliyev, who is also a corresponding member the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and a member of the IAU.

Nasimi planet, assigned permanent number 32939, follows an orbit between Mars and Jupiter, within the asteroid belt. The planet was discovered by Czech astronomers at the Kleť Observatory on October 24, 1995, and its provisional name was 1995 UN2.

Up to now, the planet has been observed 807 times at the world’s various observatories.
