A spokesman for Yemen’s rebel-controlled military, Sharaf Luqman, said on Sunday that the truce had been approved to “open the gate for humanitarian aid,” and warned that a breach of the truce would be met with a military response, the state Saba news agency reported.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said on Friday that the cease-fire would begin on Tuesday, provided the Houthi rebels accepted the deal. Saudi coalition spokesman Brig. Gen. Ahmed Aseeri also warned that any violation by the Houthi rebels, a Shiite group with links to Iran, would end the cease-fire.

The truce would be the first since the Saudi-led coalition began carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis on March 26. The strikes are aimed at returning President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who is in exile in Riyadh, to power.
