Militants claiming loyalty to Islamic State said via Twitter that it was them who had carried out the attack.

Libya has been engulfed in civil war since 2011 when the country`s leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown and killed. To date, there are two rival governments in the country, one based in the city of Tobruk and the other in Tripoli. The internationally recognized government in Tobruk is fighting numerous rebel groups, including IS militants.
