Grand Festival of Fire in Azerbaijan
A festive mood was prevailing in the Azerbaijani city of Ganja on May 15.
Tens of thousands of the city’s residents took to the streets holding flowers and the Azerbaijani flag to greet the torch of the Baku 2015 First European Games and to attend in the Festival of Fire.

The city’s residents also watched with great interest to a flashmob, dedicated to the European Games.

Afterwards, 10 athletes who started the torch relay, passing the European Games torch to each other along the Nizami Ganjavi Avenue reached the Heydar Aliyev Center.

There, a torch lighting ceremony was held on a stage set in front of the Heydar Aliyev Center.

A colorful fireworks display was also held at the end of the Festival of Fire.

Baku 2015 is the first-ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent that will take place on June 12-28, 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
