US President Barack Obama’s personal Twitter account has gained over 1 million follows within less than half a day of its launch on Monday.

According to Obama’s official @POTUS Twitter account, the US President currently has 1.35 million followers, and is following a total of 65 people and organizations including former US President Bill Clinton, White House National Security Advisor Susan Rice as well as the Defense and Justice departments.

Earlier on Monday, the White House announced that the Obama had launched his personal Twitter account as a way to engage the US public more closely to make his administration the most open and participatory in history.



“POTUS [President of the United States] will give Americans a new venue to engage on the issues that matter most to them,” a statement from the White House read on Monday.

The US president’s Twitter account description says that all of his tweets may be archived.
