The United States condemns the terrorist attack on the Russian Embassy in Syria’s capital Damascus and demands those responsible to be held accountable, US Department of State spokesperson Jeff Rathke said in a statement.

“The United States condemns today`s mortar attack on the Russian Embassy compound in Damascus, a facility protected by international law,” Rathke said on Tuesday. “We call for those responsible for all such acts to be held accountable and continue to stress the need for a political solution to the turmoil in Syria.”

Earlier on Tuesday, still unidentified perpetrators fired two mortar rounds that landed on the grounds of the Russian Embassy in Damascus. No one was injured in the attack, however the attack caused damage to the Embassy’s property.

The Russian Foreign Ministry and the United Nations Security Council condemned the attack and called it an act of terrorism.

The Ministry urged an immediate end to such acts and all violence in the crisis-hit country.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011. The Syrian government is fighting against several insurgent groups, including the Islamic State and the al-Nusra Front.
