Russia Claims No `Post-Soviet Monopoly` - Lavrov
Russia`s neighbors have their own foreign policy, Sergei Lavrov underscored. John Kerry`s Sochi visit made clear that the two countries should avoid steps that may hamper bilateral relations, Russia`s top diplomat added.
Russia is not claiming to have a monopoly in the post-Soviet region and acknowledges its neighbors’ rights to have multifaceted foreign policies, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday before the Russian upper house of parliament.

“We don’t have a monopoly on the activities in this space. We acknowledge the rights of our neighbors, once soviet republics but now sovereign states, to have multifaceted foreign policies.”

US Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit to Sochi last week showed the need for both Moscow and Washington to avoid steps that could hamper bilateral relations, Sergei Lavrov added.

“Talks in Sochi on May 12 with US Secretary of State John Kerry created the understanding of the necessity of avoiding steps that could cause long-term harm to the cooperation of the two countries in various areas,” Lavrov said.
