UN Humanitarian Chief in Iran to discuss regional issues
UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos arrived in Tehran on May 20 to discuss regional issues, mainly the crisis in Yemen with senior Iranian officials.
She is also scheduled to talk about latest developments in Iraq and Syria, Iran’s Fars news agency reported May 20.

During her one-day stay Amos will meet Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Amos had traveled to Iran twice in September 2013 and in August 2014.

On May 19, Amos and Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian in a telephone conversation discussed the latest conditions in Yemen, especially immediate dispatch of humanitarian aid to the war-stricken nation.

The Saudi Arabia-led coalition has imposed an air and naval blockade on Yemen as part of its campaign to oust the Iranian-backed Shiite Houthi rebels, who have taken most of the country and forced President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to flee to Riyadh.

Saudi fighter jets have prevented Iranian planes from entering Yemeni airspace in recent weeks. Iran says that the planes were carrying humanitarian aid to Yemen. Saudi Arabia accuses the country of providing military support to the Yemeni Shiite rebels.
