"To ensure security in Caspian Sea does not require additional measures" - Russian MFA

“There are all legal means to ensure security in the Caspian region and no need to create new ones,” Ambassador at Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry Igor Bratchikov told reporters, Azvision.az reports citing TASS.

“We have enough mechanisms to ensure the security of the region in the Caspian Sea. In addition to the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, we have a valid agreement on cooperation in the field of security. Several protocols, including protocol on cooperation in fighting terrorism signed at Caspian Summit last year,” Igor Bratchikov told.

The ambassador noted that Caspian littoral countries have demonstrated that they have the ability to solve complex international issues despite of the influence of the outside forces from the region.

Note that after long negotiations the convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea was signed at the 5th Summit of Caspian littoral states in Aktau city of Kazakhstan in August last year. The convention had been signed by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, former President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, Russian President Vladimir Putin, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow.

Azerbaijani Parliament has approved Convention on Legal status of the Caspian Sea in February of this year. Last week Russian State Duma has approved the convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea.
