About 200 tremors recorded in Istanbul - vice president

Since Sept. 26, about 200 tremors have been recorded in Istanbul, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said, AzVision.az reports citing the Turkish media.

As a result of the earthquake that occurred Sept. 26 in Istanbul, 473 buildings were damaged, he said.

He also noted that as a result of the earthquake, a total of 34 Turkish citizens were injured.

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit Istanbul on Sept. 26.

"The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of five kilometers. Tremors were felt in neighboring cities and Canakkale province," reports read.

The earthquake occurred at 13:59 (GMT +3).

A number of schools cancelled classes.

Earlier, an earthquake of 4.7 magnitude hit Istanbul on Sept. 24.

The Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute under Bogazici University earlier predicted the 7.5-magnitude earthquake in Istanbul city.

Turkey is located in a seismically active zone and earthquakes occur quite often, leading to casualties. The most powerful fluctuations of the earth's crust in the country were noted in 1999 in the Marmara Sea region. The magnitude of aftershocks then was 7.4. The earthquake caused the deaths of about 18,000 people.
