Iran eager to bolster ties with Azerbaijan: speaker

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani highlighted the importance of relations with Azerbaijan and said there is no restriction on the bilateral ties between the two neighboring countries in parliamentary fields.

Speaking at a meeting with Azerbaijani Ambassador to Tehran Bunyad Huseynov, Larijani hailed Iran-Azerbaijan relationship as cordial and deep-rooted and said the people and officials of the two countries have always been willing to promote their mutual cooperation in all areas, AzVision.az reports citing Tasnim News.

“Iran sees no restrictions on expanding parliamentary cooperation with Azerbaijan and relations should be facilitated in all areas,” he added.

“In the current situation, grounds are set for strengthening economic, political, cultural and social cooperation and relations between Iran and Azerbaijan, so the two countries’ officials should strive to tap the potentials,” Larijani went on to say.

The Azerbaijani ambassador, for his part, described the bilateral ties as broad and historical and said Baku always supports the development of cooperation and exchanges between the two countries.

In late October, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, met in Baku on the sidelines of the 18th Summit of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Iran and Azerbaijan have ramped up efforts in recent years to forge a closer partnership in various areas.

In 2016, President Ilham Aliyev paid an official visit to Tehran, during which the two sides signed 11 memorandums of understanding and agreements to promote mutual cooperation in a range of areas.
