 Azerbaijani parliament elects new ombudsman

The name of New Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan has been announced, AzVision.az reports.

The issue of the nomination to the post of Commissioner for Human Rights of Azerbaijan (Ombudsman) has been discussed at the meeting of the Azerbaijani Parliament held today.

 After the discussion, the issue has been voted. As a result of voting, Sabina Aliyeva has been elected the new Commissioner for the Human Rights of Azerbaijan (Ombudsman).

President Ilham Aliyev put forward the candidacy of 3 persons to the position of Ombudsman.

The candidates were Kamala Abiyeva, a judge of Baku Court of Appeal, Kamala Aliyeva, Head of Human Rights and Public Relations Division of the Supreme Court and Sabina Aliyeva, Deputy Head of Administrative Office of the Constitution Court.

Currently, Elmira Suleymanova acts as the Human Rights Commissioner of Azerbaijan. She is Ombudsman since 2002. Her term of office ended on March 5, 2017.
