Azerbaijani FM: Co-chair countries should push Armenia toward peace
Armenia, in flagrant violation of the norms and principles of international law, carried out military aggression against Azerbaijan. As a result, 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands were occupied, and over a million Azerbaijani people were subjected to brutal ethnic cleansing.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov made the remarks in an interview with Russian Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper.

According to the minister, as the leaders the OSCE Minsk Group co-chair countries stated, the status quo is unacceptable.

“The political and legal basis of our position is formed by the norms and principles of international law, the UN Charter, the four UN Security Council resolutions and other international documents. The four UN resolutions demand immediate, unconditional and full withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from the occupied lands. Unfortunately, these demands remain unfulfilled for 20 years. Armenia ignores them”, the minister said.

E. Mammadyarov said there have been intensive negotiations over the past year in terms of the presidents’ meetings.

“The leaders of the OSCE MG co-chair countries also were actively involved in this process. In August of last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin organized a meeting between the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents in Sochi. In September, US Secretary of State John Kerry held a meeting between the two presidents. In late October, French President François Hollande held a yet another meeting between them. Despite the MG co-chairs insisting to begin working on the Great Peace Treaty, the deadlock has not been broken in any way. While Armenia is turning down all calls, Azerbaijan has repeatedly expressed its readiness to begin working on the Great Peace Agreement. We think the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs and peacekeeping missions need to take some actions to push Armenia toward peace so that we can make a progress in settling the conflict,” the FM added.
