Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remains only unresolved problem for Azerbaijan
Today, Azerbaijan`s only unsolved problem is the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the problem of refugees and internally displaced persons which emerged as a result of the conflict.

Ali Hasanov, Azerbaijanв`s deputy prime minister and head of the State Committee on Refugees and IDPs made the remark during a meeting with Simone Wolken, Regional Representative of UN High Commissioner for Refugees in the South Caucasus and Dag Sigurdson, head of UNHCR representation in Azerbaijan on June 4, the Committee said.

The sides noted that Azerbaijan was elected a member of the Executive Committee of UNHCR, adding that Azerbaijan conducted great work to address the problems of refugees and IDPs.

Hasanov touched upon the activity of the OSCE Minsk Group, which was entrusted with mediatory mission to resolve the conflict, and the issue of non-compliance with the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council, OSCE, PACE and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

``This is a great injustice and a violation of international law. This creates the impression that international law is powerless and it`s undertaken by the states, influencing international relations in the world,`` Hasanov said.

He also assessed this situation as being the result of the policy of double standards by those powers which are trying to teach the world a lesson of democracy while talking about human rights.

The precarious cease-fire between Azerbaijan and Armenia was reached after a lengthy war that displaced over a million Azerbaijanis and has been in place between the two South Caucasus countries since 1994. Since the hostilities, Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan`s internationally recognized territory, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The UN Security Council has adopted four resolutions on Armenia`s withdrawal from the Azerbaijani territory, but they have not been enforced to this day.

Peace talks, mediated by Russia, France and the U.S. through the OSCE Minsk Group, have been largely fruitless so far.

Walken, for her part, expressed satisfaction with Azerbaijan`s new results of economic development, noting that she was delighted by the fact that the country has become a venue for major international events.

She voiced confidence in the successful realization of the First European Games "Baku-2015" and congratulated the people of Azerbaijan and wished success to the athletes.

The inaugural Baku 2015 European Games is an historic event for the continent. It will gather some 6,000 athletes from 50 countries to compete in 16 Olympic and four non-Olympic sports.
