European Games in Baku is most important sporting event - Russian Olympic Committee
The first European Games in Baku is the most important sporting event of the year, the president of the Russian Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov told reporters June 12 at the opening ceremony of the House of Russian fans in Baku.

The opening of the House of Russian fans in Azerbaijan is an evidence of very close links between the two countries, he said.

“The cooperation between Azerbaijan and Russia in the field of sport is constantly developing,” said Zhukov. “Azerbaijani and Russian athletes, as well as fans of our countries, historically have very much in common. We have a common sporting heritage formed in the Soviet era, common cultural and historical traditions.”

Baku 2015 is the first-ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent that took place on June 12 and will last until June 28, 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
