Female athletes said that they are fighting for the injured team members as well. They said that after the incident with Vanessa Sahinovich, she receives fairly strong support. “It is pretty awful to come here for the first European Games and encounter such an incident,” said the female athletes. “We are very upset.”
Talking about the health condition of Verena Breit, who stayed with the team in Azerbaijan, the female athletes said that she is not able to participate in competitions, but will remain with them in Baku, which is very important from a psychological point of view for the team.
President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Austria Karl Stoss said that three Austrian female athletes - Vanessa Sahinovich, Luna Pajer and Verena Breit were injured as a result of a road accident involving a bus, which took place on June 11 in the Athletes’ Village in Baku.
Vanessa Sahinovich has been sent for treatment in Vienna.
Baku 2015 is the first-ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent that began June 12 and will last until June 28, 2015.
There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.
Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
