Independent Azerbaijan in reliable hands, with founding principles laid by Heydar Aliyev
June 15 is one of the most remarkable days in the history of Azerbaijan’s statehood, Novruz Mammadov, deputy head of the Azerbaijani presidential administration, chief of the administration’s foreign relations department tweeted June 15.

“Independent Azerbaijan, with founding principles laid by Heydar Aliyev, is in reliable hands,” Mammadov wrote on the occasion of the National Salvation Day, which is marked in Azerbaijan on June 15.

Mammadov said he is sure every Azerbaijani who loves the homeland is proud of the country`s historical achievements.

“As national leader Heydar Aliyev once declared – Azerbaijan’s independence is eternal,” Mammadov wrote.

In the middle of an ongoing war with Armenia for Nagorno Karabakh, which began in 1988, Azerbaijan gained its independence in October of 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The fist years of the country`s independence were characterized by the crisis within the country and in the government. Chaos occupied all spheres of social life. The situation in the army was even worse, as the number of deserters increased.

As the war was still going on, the Armenian side continued occupation of Azerbaijan`s lands. The country did not have a strong leader, as separate groups and individuals struggled among themselves for power.

Azerbaijan`s National Front captured the power in the country on May 14, 1992, and since the first days of its ill-determined management showed its inability to rule. In 1993, Azerbaijan was on the brink of a civil war.

In such a difficult period of time, people invited Azerbaijan`s prominent politician Heydar Aliyev from Nakhchivan to Baku. With the insistence of the people and the authorities of the republic he came to Baku on June 19.

In a short period of time, Aliyev was able to prevent a civil war in the country. On June 15, 1993, he was elected chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan and this date entered our history as the day of National Salvation.

With the insistence of the people, in June 1997 Milli Mejlis (National Assembly) declared June 15 as a holiday, which is marked in the country every year.
