European Games extremely important for Azerbaijani karatekas
The first European Games has become a very important competition for the Azerbaijani karatekas, said Firdovsi Farzaliyev, the Azerbaijani athlete, who is the first medal winner at the Baku 2015 karate events.

He made the remarks June 16 at a press conference in Baku.

“Apart from that the Games are being held for the first time, we were competing at home,” said Farzaliyev. “From this point of view, it was important for us that Azerbaijan’s flag is raised at the competitions.”

Farzaliyev also thanked Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev for karate being included to the Baku 2015 European Games.

“Despite that karate is a non-Olympic sport, at an initiative by Azerbaijan’s president, it was included to the program of the European Games,” said Farzaliyev.

The athlete also underscored the role of the fans’ support during the events.

“The spectators supported us very much with their applauses at the events. I also would like to thank our head coach, the leadership of the Karate Federation of Azerbaijan, all those who worked with us. I wish the athletes good luck!,” he said.

The European Games that kicked off in Baku June 12, will last till June 28.

There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
