Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev took part on June 17 in the ceremony of awarding the winners of the men’s freestyle wrestling in 65 kg weight category.

Azerbaijani wrestler Togrul Asgarov captured the gold medal, defeating Frank Chamizo Marquez, who represented Italy, with a score 5:0.

Mustafa Kaya (Turkey) and Ilias Bekbulatov (Russia) shared the bronze medal, both coming in third place.

Ilham Aliyev personally awarded the athletes with medals.

Togrul Asgarov is the gold medal winner at the 2012 Summer Olympics, held in London.

He also holds the gold medal of the European Wrestling Championships held in Belgrade, Serbia in 2012, and a silver medal of the World Wrestling Championships held in Moscow, Russia in 2010.

The Azerbaijani national wrestling squad already has several gold, silver and bronze medals at the Baku 2015 European Games.

The European Games that kicked off in Baku June 12, will last till June 28. There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports.

More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition. Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
