The defense ministry`s international activity is aimed at realization of national interests and ensuring the safety as part of a single foreign policy strategy, the minister said.
“The defense ministry`s preferred practical cooperation in these activities through bilateral and multilateral relations. Series of measures, like conducting defense and security reforms, increasing the combat capability of the Armed Forces, studying best practices in military education, participating in peacekeeping operations, ensuring energy and cybersecurity were taken last year.
In recent years, the defense ministers of Latvia, Serbia, Turkey, Georgia, Lithuania, Kyrgyzstan and Iran have visited Azerbaijan. Moreover, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces held high-level dialogue meetings with the Turkish Armed Forces and the Joint Staff Headquarters of Pakistan.
The Azerbaijani Armed Forces continue contributing to international security and stability. 94 Azerbaijani peacekeepers guard Kabul international airport as part of the NATO-led non-combat mission “Resolute Support” launched in Afghanistan in 2015. So far, about 3,000 Azerbaijani servicemen have been involved in peacekeeping operations abroad.
In addition, the Defense Ministry benefits the existing mechanisms as part of the NATO-led program “Partnership for Peace”. In 2014, one battalion of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces received a certificate of NATO on combat readiness in the framework of the Operational Capabilities Concept.
The experience Azerbaijani servicemen gained in peacekeeping operations and services side by side with the military of other countries in the NATO headquarters has contributed to strengthening combat capability of the country’s Armed Forces. Currently, 10 Azerbaijani officers are serving in various NATO headquarters, and this service has turned Azerbaijan into a leading country among other partners of NATO”.
