Highlights of the Day - 25 June | PHOTOS, VIDEO
Azerbaijan`s Teymur Mammadov gave the host nation their first boxing gold medal, after prevailing in the light-heavyweight (81kg) division against Italian Valentino Manfredonia in a unanimous points decision. The feat was all the more impressive as the Azerbaijani had stepped down from heavyweight to the lighter category to enable a compatriot to fight in the heavier class.
Poland`s Angelika Wator won the individual women`s sabre in dramatic fashion against Azerbaijan`s Sevil Bunyatova, with both fencers believing they had taken the decisive point. To add some spice to the drama, Wator had earlier beaten Bunyatova`s twin sister Sevinc in the semi-final.
Russia`s triple gold medallist Maria Astashkina destroyed both her rivals and the junior world record in the 200m breaststroke, winning by 10m and taking six-hundredths of a second off the `target time` set up by the international swimming federation FINA.
The Russians also enjoyed success and drama in 3x3 Basketball, when a last-second shot from Andrey Kanygin helped avoid an upset and ensured his country reached the quarter-finals at the expense of Estonia.
