Hunt for journalists in Armenia
Ashot Melikyan, Chairman of the Committee to Protect Freedom of Expression told reporters on Friday that “a hunt for journalists” has been on since June 23.

It was strange for Armenians to hear Vice-Chairman of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Armen Ashotyan saying he was proud of the police actions, against peaceful protesters. Note that hundreds uniformed and plain-clothed policemen used force against the peaceful crowd, especially journalists, breaking video and photo cameras.

“I think that in terms of statehood and national security the events on June 23 were more dangerous ” he said.

Young `patriots`cannot defend their rights inside the country, with violence used against them, which could disappoint them.

Mr Melikyan also threatened Armenian journalists saying that `a journalist-turned-activist is not a journalist any more. So it is up to them to decide`.
