A Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride parade had been due to take place in the city’s famous Istiklal Street in Beyoglu on Sunday.
An Anadolu Agency correspondent said one group gathered in front of Galatasaray High School on the street, unfurled banners and chanted. The group, which wanted to march towards Taksim Square, ignored warnings by police to disperse.
After the police action, people in the group fled into nearby alleys.
An opposition Republican People`s Party member of parliament, Mahmut Tanal, was photographed standing on a water-cannon vehicle.
Another group, who wanted to march towards Taksim Square from Istiklal Avenue did not disband, despite police warnings.
After police broke up different groups, Istiklal Street -- which was closed for entry and exit for a period -- was opened again.
