Baku can be candidate for hosting 2019 Summer Universiade
Baku can be a candidate for hosting 2019 Summer Universiade, president of Russian Students Sports Union Oleg Matytsin told TASS news agency.
He made the remarks following the meeting of the executive committee of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) that was held June 30-July 1 in South Korea’s Gwangju city.

Gwangju city will host the 2015 Summer Universiade on July 4-14.

“Currently, several countries are being considered as the prospective candidates for hosting the 2019 Summer Universiade,” he said, adding that these countries are Italy, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.

However, none of the abovementioned countries have officially confirmed their desire to host the Universiade, said Matytsin, adding that negotiations are underway.

He said that the candidates for hosting 2019 Summer Universiade will be presented at FISU General Assembly to be held in November.

The 2019 Summer Universiade was initially scheduled for Brasília, Brazil in July 2019. However, on December 23, 2014 it was confirmed that Brasília pull out of hosting the event citing financial problems. Therefore, the International University Sports Federation decided to reopen the bidding process after the withdrawal.

The 2019 Winter Universiade will be held in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.
