SOCAR permits Russia
The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has permitted Russia’s Gazprom company to supply gas to the methanol plant of Azerbaijan Methanol Company (AzMeCo), SOCAR President Rovnag Abdullayev told reporters.

“We don’t need to import gas and we fulfill all the contract obligations,” he said. “The point is that there was constructed a methanol plant which didn’t sign a long-term contract with us on gas supply. Therefore, we don’t have resources for this plant.”

For this reason, SOCAR didn’t object to gas supply from Gazprom to AzMeCo, said Abdullayev. “An agreement was signed to permit Russian gas supply to the plant via our pipelines.”

Earlier, Alexey Miller, head of Gazprom said that the company can supply several billion cubic meters of gas to Azerbaijan per year.

Currently, Gazprom has a contract on purchase of Azerbaijani gas. The contact was signed Oct.14, 2009 with the possibility of extension. The contract between SOCAR and Russia’s Gazprom allows to suspend and resume gas supplies any time.
