Matthew Bryza discloses best option for peaceful solution to Nagorno Karabakh conflict
Madrid document is the best option for a peaceful solution to the conflict.

"I believe that the best option for a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was presented by the co-chairs of the Minsk Group in the so-called `Madrid document` in November 2007."

The statement came from former US Assistant Secretary for South Caucasus, ex-ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza in an interview with the "Bulletin of the Caucasus".

"Madrid document is about the balance between the fundamental principles of the Helsinki Final Act of the territorial integrity of states, self-determination and non-use of force".

In particular, he calls for a return of all the seven regions surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan, establishment of the interim status of Nagorno-Karabakh, voting of Nagorno-Karabakh residents on the final status of the region, creation of a corridor linking Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia, and for a peacekeeping mission.

According to Bryza, the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia should resolve their remaining differences, but to do this, Presidents Aliyev and Sargsyan will need to restore mutual trust, have faith in the fact that their partners are willing and able to agree on these important basic principles in their respective political systems .

"The President of the United States can and should play a role in this exercise strengthening the trust between his Azerbaijani and Armenian counterparts," he said.
