Azerbaijani MP: Armenia`s accession to Customs Union not independent
The Principal differences between such disparate geopolitical platforms as the Customs Union and EU, forced Armenia to choose one of the two, Azerbaijani MP, a member of Bureau and Deputy Chairman of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly`s Committee, Azay Guliyev said on Friday.
"The Last decision of the Armenian president made the adoption of the Association Agreement with the EU impossible. Armenia`s statement on joining the Customs Union and concrete steps taken by it in this direction, confirmed once again that this country is not independent in reality and doesn`t have the necessary potential for this. In reality, given that Russia absolutely controls Armenia, its choice didn`t surprise anybody.

However, Russia did it in such a way that Armenia lost its remaining influence. It can be said that it caused a major blow to Armenia`s international image," Guliyev said.

According to him, after Armenia`s decision, it became clear once again that Azerbaijan is an independent state in the truest sense of this word; it is able to make decisions in accordance with its national interests and protect its sovereignty on all issues.

"In addition, it was proved once again that it is difficult for countries to maintain their independence in a geopolitical region such as ours. The West understands how the independent policy pursued by Ilham Aliyev is significant not only for Azerbaijan, but also for the whole South Caucasus and Europe, the MP said.

"When coming to the things which don`t suit us, I can say that one of them is that the borders of the Customs Union became fully closer to us. With this regard, Russia will increase pressure on Azerbaijan in the future in order to make it to join the Union. On the other side, Armenia`s political circles attempt to form such opinion in the West that Armenia had to accept Russia`s demands, as it is in a poor and weakened position," Guliyev said.

According to him, Armenia will try to convince Europe that if the West sufficiently supports Armenia, it will be able to change its policy in the future.

"We all know that it is nothing but a double game and the next cunning of Armenia.

According to calculations of Armenian politicians, Armenia will maintain its status of being Russia`s outpost and will gain Russia`s further support this way, at the same time will attempt to increase economic and political support from the West. My words are proven by the statements made by official representatives of EU in recent times, in which Armenia is presented as a country that was subject to attacks. It is absolutely clear that such double support to Armenia in not in our interest. We should take this into account in our foreign policy," the MP said.
