4,000 signed up as parliament candidates in Iran
Iranian Minister of Interior Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said so far 4,000 people have signed up for the candidacy of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Speaking during a press conference, Fazli predicted that the upcoming elections will be a robust political arena.

Iran is going to hold the elections of the Parliament and the Assembly of Experts simultaneously on February 26, 2016.

He said the Interior Ministry will try to pave the way for healthy political competitions and will not misuse its power for illegal purposes.

Fazli stressed the need to help as many people attend the elections as possible.

The Parliament currently has 290 representatives, changed from the previous 272 seats since the February 18, 2000 election. The recent election took place on March 2, 2012.

Currently, the Parliament`s 290 members, 14 of whom represent non-Muslim religious minorities, are popularly elected for four-year terms. About 8 percent of the Parliament are women.

All People`s House of Iran candidates and all legislation from the assembly must be approved by the Guardian Council. Candidates must pledge in writing that they are committed, in theory and in practice, to the Iranian constitution.
