Syrian opposition to present roadmap for peace settlement at meeting with Lavrov
Haitham Mana`a, a representative of the Syrian opposition and a member of the Cairo II committee is expected to present a peace settlement roadmap at a meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov on Friday.
The case in hand is a peace plan that the opponents of President Bashar al-Assad`s administration adopted in Cairo on June 9. They also adopted then a National Charter for Syria, which they believe will lay the groundwork for a provisional constitution in the future.
The National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces boycotted the Cairo conference.
Syrian opposition coalition agrees with need of preserving Syrian statehood
The `committee` that was formed in Cairo hopes to rally Moscow`s support for the roadmap, Mana`a told TASS. If the roadmap gets endorsement at a high level at the UN right now and the international community gives attention to the document, this will facilitate convocation of the Geneva-3 conference.
To make Geneva-3 possible, a well-specified plan of action is needed and it should include the setting up of specialized groups to monitor the situation in Syria, Mana`a said.
He indicated it is highly desirable that these groups consist of experts, not politicians, and their job will be to analyze the situation and take decisions on how to counteract violence and terror, on the one hand, and how to put an end to the state institutes, which he claims cannot serve the Syrian people or remain part of political settlement anymore.
Mana`a believes a very suitable moment has come to give concrete contours to political settlement in Syria.
