Egypt seeks to promote bid for UN Security Council seat
Egypt plans to launch a promotion plan to boost its bid to win a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council.
In a Wednesday statement, the Foreign Ministry said it will organize a five-day forum on Aug. 28 for delegates of the permanent states of the Security Council to highlight Egyptian priorities.

"The forum is part of an integrated plan to promote the Egyptian bid for a non-permanent seat in the Security Council`s 2016-2017 committee," Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said. "It also aims to highlight the Egyptian strategy in terms of dealing with African, Arab and international issues."

According to the spokesman, Egypt will dispatch envoys to a number of countries and hold a series of activities with a view to winning support for the Egyptian bid to win the seat, which is traditionally elected for a two-year term by the General Assembly.

Elections for the seat will be held in October.

Egypt had served as a non-permanent member of the Security Council four times, the most recent of which was in 1996-97.
