US urges Azerbaijani citizens to be active in upcoming elections
The United States calls on all citizens of Azerbaijan to participate in the elections and urged to restraint and prevent violence or provocation before, during and after the polling day.
The statement came from spokesman of the U.S. State Department Marie Harf .

"We also urge the authorities [ of Azerbaijan ] to protect the basic human rights and freedoms - freedom of expression and freedom of assembly”, she said.

Reiterating U.S. support for free, fair and transparent presidential elections in Azerbaijan, Harf said that after the elections the U.S. will announce its assessment of the electoral process.

10 candidates run for presidency in Azerbaijan. Among them are head of the New Azerbaijan Party, incumbent president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev , chairman of United Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, MP Gudrat Hasanguliyev, self-promoted MP Zahid Oruc, chairman of the Social Democratic Party Araz Alizadeh, nominated by the initiative group of voters ` National Council of Democratic Forces " Jamil Gasanli.

Other candidates are chairman of “Adalat”, MP Ilyas Ismayilov, Chairman of the " Modern Musavat" party, Hafiz Hajiyev, chairman of " Umid" Iqbal Aghazadeh, chairman of the Democratic Party Sardar Jalaloglu , as well as chairmanof the National Revival Party , MP Faraj Guliyev .

According to opinion polls, the current head of state is a favorite among candidates.
