In the women’s 200-meter breaststroke competition held on the sixth and last day of the tournament at the OCBC Aquatic Centre in Singapore, Gunes, 17, clocked in 2.19.64 seconds to claim the top spot.
With this win, Gunes broke the juniors` record, and became the third woman in any age category to swim under 2.20.00 after Danish Rikke Moeller Pedersen with 2.19.11 and American Rebeccca Soni with 2.19.59.
Gunes also won the women`s 50 and 100-meter breaststroke titles at the same competition, along with the 200 medley.
She also claimed the 200-meter breaststroke title in the 2013 World Junior Swimming Championships, competing for Ukraine, before acquiring Turkish citizenship in 2014.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated Gunes over her historic success at the championship.
