Baku hosts 3rd meeting of ICAPP Women`s Wing
The 3rd meeting of the Women`s Wing of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) kicked off in Baku on Sep.2.
The meeting is attended by delegates from ICAPP member states, state and government representatives of Azerbaijan and other guests.

Addressing the meeting, Malahat Ibrahimgizi, Azerbaijani co-chairperson of the ICAPP Women’s Wing, member of the YAP Political Council, said such events make important contributions to solving women’s problems in the ICAPP member states.

She also noted that for many years YAP is one the leading members of Asian political parties.

“In Asia there are more than 70 countries which are represented by nearly 300 political parties. YAP organized a number of ICAPP events in Baku. The ICAPP Women’s Ring, chaired both by Azerbaijan and South Korea, has been functioning for three years. Representatives from 16 countries have joined today’s meeting,” Ibrahimgizi said.

Park In-sook, Korean co-chairperson of the ICAPP Women`s Wing, said today’s meeting is important in terms of increasing the women’s role in social life.

Great progress was achieved in promoting gender equality in the globalizing world, and women began to take an active part in the activities of parliaments and state authorities, the co-chairperson said, adding that the ICAPP has done a lot of work to address women’s problems.

Bahar Muradova, vice-speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament, also delivered a speech at the meeting.

She noted that the ICAPP Women’s Wing has always done huge work in the social involvement of women and their presence in state bodies.

Muradova said the ongoing conflicts have caused much deprivation to people, adding that Azerbaijan itself is facing similar problems.

She also said Azerbaijan is not underdeveloped despite the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“I think Asian countries suffering from conflicts can use the example of Azerbaijan. In spite of being in a state of conflict, Azerbaijan has carried out extensive work in ensuring stability, social welfare and development, and in women’s involvement in social life,” she stressed.

Chairwoman of the State Committee for Family, Woman and Children Affairs Hijran Huseynova said in his speech at the event that the increasing of women’s involvement in the globalizing world and creation of mechanisms for this is an important issue, adding that during the process of globalizations many countries as well as developed countries face similar problems.

“Problems like migration, urbanization, refugees and IDPs, early marriage, violence, etc. cover all countries. Over a million people became refugees and IDPs in the wake of Armenia’s occupation of 20 percent territory of Azerbaijan. Of them, more than 400,000 were women and more than 300,000 were children. Despite these difficulties, women managed to take their place in Azerbaijan. They now actively participate in the parliament, state bodies, and the country’s social life. And they are increasingly represented in the elective bodies. At the same time, NGOs dealing with women’s affairs have increased in numbers. This is the logical of the Azerbaijani government’s successful women policy,” she added.

The event was then followed with plenary meetings which focused on issues of women’s participation in society, state bodies and other areas, women and education, women and health, women and elimination of poverty, and political representation of women.
