Moldova hopes to receive gas from Azerbaijan through Romania

Moldova expects to receive gas from Azerbaijan through Romania thanks to an agreement signed by Azerbaijan’s State Oil Company SOCAR and the Romanian Romgaz S.A., speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, head of the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity Igor Grosu said on TVR Moldova.

“Under this agreement, gas from Azerbaijan will go through Turkiye to the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline and to Romania. This will allow Moldova to buy it. We will use this additional source of gas,” Grosu said.

He noted that gas from Romania to Moldova can be supplied via the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline with a length of 43.2 km, which was built with the help of the EU back in 2014 and has not been used all these years. Grosu noted that the republic, if the price is favorable, will be able to pump it into the underground storage facilities of neighboring countries, since it doesn’t have its own ones.

The throughput capacity of the gas pipeline from Romania is 1.5 billion cubic meters per year, while the republic consumes up to 3 billion cubic meters of this fuel.

On February 3, a contract was signed in Baku between SOCAR and Romgaz on the supply of up to 1 billion cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan to Romania.
