The new landmine clearance project will allow over 3,000 former internally displaced persons (IDPs) of Azerbaijan to their native lands, UNDP (the United Nations Development Program) Resident Representative a.i. in Azerbaijan Nuno Queirós said, AzVision.az reports.
Queirós made the remark during an event dedicated to the launch of "Support for increasing the capacity of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) for the safe return of former IDPs" project.
He also noted that the funds of the European Union (EU) were invested in the implementation of this project.
"We thank the EU for the assistance and the investment of 4.25 million euro, thanks to which more than 3,000 people will be able to return to their homelands. This project is being implemented by the UNDP in cooperation with ANAMA and the Government of Azerbaijan," Queirós added.
Besides, he said that, within the framework of the above-mentioned project, the first female sapper team will also be established.
In 2022, the demining operations in Azerbaijan's liberated areas resulted in clearance of 8,780 anti-personnel and 4,133 anti-tank landmines, as well as 14,950 unexploded ordnances. About 41,915 hectares of land have been cleared of mines and unexploded ordnances.
