An estimated 300 flamingos were battered to death and many others injured in Pétrola lake in Albacete, southern Spain, when violent hail storms hit the area Aug. 31, according to Spanish press reports.
Ovidio García, from Albacete’s fire service, Sepei, told Spanish newspaper La Voz de Galicia that crews used two inflatable boats to access the dead and injured birds in the middle of the lake.
The fierce storms, which swept through various parts of Spain last week, wrecked homes and cars and caused widespread flooding in some areas.
