  Azerbaijan, Pakistan in talks on construction of new oil refinery

Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Energy Kamal Abbasov and Director of Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency under the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan (AREA) Javid Abdullayev have attended the Pakistan Mineral Investment Summit in Islamabad: “Dust to the development” international event, AzVision.az reports.

Addressing the ministerial session on “Development of the mineral resources industry and sustainable management, Deputy Minister Kamal Abbasov informed about the development of the oil and gas industry of Azerbaijan, production volumes, export dynamics and future plans as well as spoke about the contribution of Azerbaijan to the global green energy transition and energy security.

Emphasizing the Azerbaijani-Pakistani relations built on the basis of common history, culture and religion as well as solidarity and mutual support, which have now reached the level of strategic partnership, the deputy minister said that there are expanding cooperation opportunities in various sectors of the economy, including energy. He also drew attention to the agreement signed between the governments of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on energy cooperation and highlighted SOCAR's activity as a reliable supplier of LNG in Pakistan during the period preceding the signing of the document. He mentioned that the agreement signed shortly before in the field of LNG supply created great opportunities in this direction.

Abbasov underlined that Azerbaijan also supplies petrochemical products and urea fertilizers to Pakistan, and exports may be expanded in the near future. The deputy minister noted that discussions are underway between the relevant authorities of the countries on possible cooperation in the construction of a new oil refinery in Pakistan.

“There are opportunities to engage in the exploration of oil and gas structures in Pakistan, as well as to cooperate with relevant companies in the mining sector,” the deputy minister emphasized.

The Summit featured discussions on investment opportunities in the mining sector along with the management, efficient use of Natural Resources, safe provision in the global supply chain.

As part of the visit, AREA Director Javid Abdullayev met with Chief Executive Officer of the Alternate Energy Development Board (AEDB) of the Energy Ministry of Pakistan, Executive Director of the AEDB Private Power & Infrastructure Board (PPIB) Shah Jahan Mirza. It is also planned to hold a number of other bilateral meetings.
